The County of Amador has never adopted a business license

There are five incorporated cities within Amador County which do issue business licenses, they are: Jackson, Sutter Creek, Ione, Plymouth and Amador City.  If you will be conducting business within any of the above named cities, you will need to contact that city clerk to obtain their forms, fees and requirements.  There are some instances when you will need to file both a fictitious business name statement with the County AND a business license with a city.

If someone is requiring proof of a business license for this County, the Board of Supervisors has provided a letter stating that one has never been adopted.  You may find a copy of it here:

The California Business and Professions Code (17900) states that in the case of an individual, a Fictitious Business Name Statement shall be filed when the name of the business is a name that does not include the surname of the individual or a name that suggests the existence of additional owners.

Fees for all filings are provided on the Fee Schedule/Clerk 

This Fictitious Business Name Form is fill-able and once it is signed it must be returned to the Clerk/Recorder's Office with the appropriate fees for filing.  You can either do this in person or through the mail.  If the form and fees are mailed your filed copies will be returned to you as soon as the statement as been filed.

Once the statement is filed with the Clerk's Office you will receive 3 endorsed filed copies.  They will be used for the following:

The first copy you will receive is certified and is what any bank would require to open a business account under the fictitious name.

The second is for publication, as the statement must be published for 4 consecutive weeks within 30 days of filing.  The publication for Amador County is done with the Amador Ledger Dispatch.  Once the publication is complete the newspaper returns a proof of publication to this office for filing.  The proof must be received and filed or the statement expires and you must pay for another filing and publication.  We suggest calling our office at 209-223-6468 approximately 6 weeks from the date the statement was received by the newspaper to assure that the proof of publication has been received by this office.

The last endorsed filed copy is for your records.  It gives the expiration date, as the filing will expire 5 years from the date of filing if the publication was completed.


According to Business and Professions Code 17922(a), upon ceasing to transact business in this state under a fictitious business name that was filed in the previous five years, a registrant shall file a statement of abandonment. The above instructions apply for filing and publication

This statement of withdrawal shall be filed and published in the same manner as shown above.  The withdrawal DOES NOT cause a fictitious business name statement to expire.
