TELEPHONE SERVICE: Do not call 9-1-1 except to report an emergency. Keep calls to a minimum, especially during a disaster. There will be others calling to report similar emergencies.
CELLULAR 9-1-1 CALLS: Sheriff’s dispatchers can now receive 9-1-1 cellular calls from AT&T, T-Mobile and Golden State Cellular. Other carriers will follow in the near future. It is important to remember that the technology is still emerging and there may be glitches until the system is refined. Cell phone providers try to calculate your approximate location using cell towers or satellite positioning. If they cannot, the call will likely go to the California Highway Patrol and then transferred to the appropriate local agency. When dialing 9-1-1 from a cell phone, calls should be for immediate assistance only. Callers should be prepared to provide their location and any essential information the dispatcher may need. Callers are always urged to call 9-1-1 from a landline instead of a cell phone, if one is available. This offers dispatchers the most accurate information to assist callers. To assure that a 9-1-1 call goes to the Amador County Sheriff’s Office, cellular phone users can program in the local emergency number:
(209) 223-1235. This number is the cell phone equivalent to 9-1-1.
